Children
learn to understand the world around them by watching everyday tasks and a
ctivities happening on a day-to-day basis. A child with a visual impairment
might not have the same naturally occurring opportunities to gain as much
visual information.
The content in this presentation will focus
on intervention ideas and strategies that promote overall learning and deve
lopment for children who are visually impaired, to help them reach their fu
ll potential. In addition, we will discuss typical visual development, what
are some vision issues that can occur in young children, and we will explo
re some commonly used terms such as acuity, field of vision and 20/20 visio
n.
Participant Objectives:
Tara Tompai began her journ

Intervenor for Deafblind Persons Program in Toronto, Canada. She continued
her education and became an orientation and mobility specialist in 2003. H
er passion for early intervention grew and she decided to pursue early chil
dhood education. Currently, Tara Tompai is an Early Childhood Vision Consul

o parents and caregivers who have children ages birth to school-age who are
diagnosed with a visual impairment.
Tara also works collaborati
vely with early childhood educators in the classroom and with other profess

Tara’s role as a vision consultant, she supports other vision consultants a
cross the province of Ontario to provide mentorship. You can follow Tara's
