Traditional models of autism identification often overlook or misinterpret the ways autism presents in girls and children from underrepresented racial, cultural, and linguistic communities—leading to missed opportunities for early support. In this interactive session, early intervention professionals will gain tools to recognize autism through a neuroaffirming and culturally responsive lens.

The session will be grounded in both professional knowledge and lived experience, as the presenter shares her personal journey as a late-diagnosed autistic woman and as a mother to an autistic daughter. Through real-life examples, reflective discussion, and practical strategies, participants will explore how masking, cultural norms, and systemic biases shape what is recognized as autism in early childhood.

Walk away with fresh perspectives, greater empathy, and actionable tools to more equitably support the children and families you serve.

Learner Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how autism may be perceived differently in girls and children from underrepresented populations, and how these differences contribute to under-identification in early intervention.
  • Reflect on the impact of gendered, cultural, and systemic biases in autism identification, informed by both research and lived experience.
  • Apply neuroaffirming, culturally responsive strategies to improve observation, engagement, and referral practices with children and families.
