From Day One: Building Coaching Foundations with Families

The first session with a family can shape the entire trajectory of early intervention services. Starting strong means shifting from provider-led treatment to a collaborative coaching partnership from day one.

This session gives providers concrete strategies to introduce the coaching model, build caregiver buy-in, and embed intervention into meaningful routines from the start. Using practical tools, scripts, and charts, participants will learn how to set achievable goals, maintain fidelity, and create the conditions for long-term success in caregiver coaching relationships.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate strategies for introducing the coaching model to families in a way that builds understanding and trust.
2. Apply routines-based practices (e.g., FGRBI routines chart) to collaboratively identify family priorities and embed learning opportunities from the start.
3. Implement adult-learning strategies during home visits by tailoring coaching techniques to each family’s readiness, priorities, and routines. 

Stacey Landberg, M.S., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist with over 20 years of expertise in early intervention, specializing in home visiting and family-centered care. She advances the field by preparing the next generation of professionals through university lecturing and delivering professional development.
