Part 1: Sensory processing allows us to take in, enjoy, and learn from the world around us! In the first of this two part series, Dr. Hattie Fleming, OTD, OTR/L will break down how to help caregivers understand sensory processing through the 8 primary sensory systems, learn to recognize their own child’s sensory needs, and explain how differences in sensory processing can impact how their child learns, plays, and regulates themselves.
Part 2: In part two of the series, Hattie will outline a toolkit for working with toddlers aged 18 months- 4 years that are demonstrating maladaptive sensory regulation strategies (such as self-harm, unsafe sensory seeking behaviors, and self-defensive behaviors such as biting). Attendees will learn how to decrease these behaviors through redirection towards adaptive, sensory based regulation strategies that are individualized for a particular child’s sensory needs. A resource will be offered which includes a variety of sensory regulation interventions appropriate for young children, how to determine which strategies would be most effective for a child with understanding of their sensory processing symptoms, and how to introduce these strategies.
Learning objectives:
- Attendees will learn about and/or expand current knowledge of sensory processing, the 8 sensory systems, and recognizing signs of differences in sensory processing in young children.
- Attendees will learn language and coaching strategies as well as receive a handout to help caregivers better understand sensory processing and how it may impact their child as well as how they can support their child through sensory regulation.
- Attendees will learn how to implement a developmentally appropriate, play-based sensory regulation toolkit for addressing dysregulation in children ages 18 months–4 years.
- Attendees will be able to assess sensory processing patterns of maladaptive regulation strategies (e.g., self-ham, unsafe sensory seeking) to select and adapt individualized, early-intervention-appropriate sensory-based regulation strategies.
Dr. Hattie Fleming, ODT, OTR/L Hattie is a bilingual occupational therapist working in early intervention in San Diego. She completed her doctorate project on the use of culturally sensitive caregiver coaching for increasing access to early intervention services for young children in American Samoa and Belize.
Passionate about the impact that caregiver coaching can have on a child’s outcomes, she has focused her career on building caregiver’s skills for supporting their own child’s sensory and regulation needs.
