Mom and BabyPediatric Sleep Intervention for 0-3

Friday, February 26, 2021 | 12:00pm - 1:30pm | Zoom Event
with Courtney Palm, LMFT

Early Intervention (EI) programs are seeing a rise in sleep disorders affecting children in the 0-3 yr category but are struggling to find trained providers to help. Currently, the gap between behavioral and medical sleep intervention is contributing to less effective treatment plans for these children and confusion for their families.  The goal of this training is to bridge the gap between systemic (medical) and developmental sleep conditions specific to children between the ages of 0-3 years. We will examine the five most common events related to sleep disruption in early childhood: gestational experience, attachment, nutrition, developmental disorders and trauma. Participants who attend this training will walk away with: assessment tools to evaluate sleep disruption, “whole child” perspective for treatment planning, knowledge of how certain developmental conditions influence sleep, and culturally-sensitive approach to working with families on sleep.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore the underlying causes of sleep disruption during the first three years of life related to nutrition, systemic factors, and development
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of traditional and alternative interventions on correcting a child’s sleep associations and rhythms
  • Analyze early childhood developmental diagnoses correlated with sleep disorders to assess the need for transdisciplinary intervention
  • Learn about the behavioral, medical, and neurological impact to chronic sleep deprivation on the developing brain
  • Understand the foundations of sleep and its affect on motor acquisition and sensory processing
  • Discuss case examples to practice utilizing the sleep questionnaire as part of the assessment and diagnosis of the sleep concern
  • Gain culturally supportive language for communicating with a family on their beliefs and needs around their child’s sleep
