Electronics use among young children was already on the rise before Covid hit, when Covid hit electronic use by children under 4 doubled. In addition to electronic use in general rising during Covid, the purchases of ebooks for children surged after the lockdown started. As we start to emerge from Covid it is the perfect time to look at the research of how young children learn and how screens may not be the best tool for that learning.

Participants will delve into the research on early brain development and how the young brain responds to screen use versus books.

Learning objectives:

  • Summarize American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization recommendations on screen time and the research driving those recommendations.
  • Describe early brain development with respect to skills such as language, social-emotional development, attention and self-regulation and explain why screens do not support that development in young children.
  • Identify why screens “entertain” and books “educate” by looking at the young brain’s response to both mediums.
  • Compare and contrast the negative effect of excess screen time on young children’s brain architecture as compared to the positive effects of storybook reading.
