Family Centered

As early intervention providers, we recognize that the family is the cornerstone for a child’s overall development. We understand the importance of providing family-centered care and the critical role this has on a child’s progress in therapy. But what happens when a family’s values differ from the providers? What do we do when we are faced with customs and child-rearing practices that differ from mainstream American practices?  Integrating culturally and linguistically responsive practices in early intervention not only reduces harm caused by our own biases, but also ensures we center the family in our service delivery.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe what a dual language learner (DLL) is and how the different types are defined
  • Identify at least 2 resources for obtaining more information for additional learning related to culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) service delivery
  • Discuss the impact of your own internalized biases and demonstrate respect for an individual's age, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, national/regional origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and veteran status.
  • Understand how to integrate a client’s/family’s' traditions, customs, values, and beliefs in service delivery
  • Discuss the importance of assessing/treating each client/family as an individual and responding to his/her/their unique needs, as opposed to stereotyping
  • Identify at least 2 appropriate intervention and assessment strategies and materials that do not violate the client's/family's unique values
  • Describe the use culturally appropriate communication with clients, caregivers, and families

Cindy EsquiviasPresenter:
Cindy Esquivias graduated from Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles with a Master of Science in Education, and CSU East Bay with a Master of Science in Speech and Language Pathology.

Following a short career as a high-school English teacher, Cindy was inspired to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology, as she realized how important early intervention was—especially when working in low-SES communities. She has a strong passion for working with pediatric populations with speech, language, feeding, and swallowing disorders. Read more
