Session 1: August 21
How to Build Trusting Partnerships with Childcare Providers: Five Ways to Set the Stage for Collaborative Coaching

All successful coaching partnerships are built on trust, but trust does not simply “happen.” We have to actively build it! In this session, we will describe five ways that early interventionists can set the stage for coaching with childcare providers while building a strong partnership built on mutual respect.

We will reflect on our biases and assumptions about childcare providers, consider how to reframe these thoughts and assumptions to honor the experiences and expertise of the childcare provider, and discuss how to communicate about our role as early interventionists in the classroom. This virtual session will include discussions, reflective activities and examples from community-based settings.
Participants will:

  • Identify at least two assumptions about childcare providers that early interventionists make that could interfere with coaching partnerships.
  • Practice how to reframe those assumptions in a way that honors childcare provider experiences and expertise.
  • Describe five ways to build trusting partnerships with childcare providers before coaching in early intervention.
  • Role play how to explain their role as a coach in early intervention to childcare providers and administrators.

Session 2: August 23
Collaborative Coaching with Childcare Providers During Everyday Classroom Routines

Have you ever found yourself working with an infant or toddler in the corner, or even in a closet? After this two-part series, we hope to make “in the corner” or “in the closet” intervention a thing of the past! This session will focus on how to use a systematic framework for coaching that helps childcare providers embed strategies into their everyday classroom activities.

These strategies will help you (and baby) get out of the corner and into the classroom routines where all children learn. The virtual session will include video exemplars, discussions, and reflective activities.

Participants will:

  • Explain why coaching in everyday classroom routines supports child learning.
  • Describe why using a coaching framework can support our interactions with caregivers in early intervention in homes and in childcare.
  • Learn how to identify classroom routines for intervention with childcare providers.
  • Identify the key components of the SS-OO-PP-RR coaching framework and explain why it benefits the childcare provider, early interventionist and the child.

RomanoAt Florida State University, Dr. Romano is an Assistant Professor in the School of Communication Science and Disorders, and she is the Director of the Communication and Early Childhood Research and Practice Center.

Her research focuses on caregiver implemented interventions to support the development of infants and toddlers with disabilities and those at risk for delays in homes and classrooms, professional development approaches for early childhood providers, and interventions that target prelinguistic communication skills. She is a speech-language pathologist/early interventionist by training, and she is a mama to three girls who keep her laughing and on her toes every day.
